Yadkins Energy Storage Project

Investing in the City of Chesapeake

Since 2018, Aypa Power has been investing in energy storage and clean energy projects to build more resilient communities and move our nation toward energy independence. Today, we operate over 33 energy projects across North America, with an additional 22 gigawatts of projects in various stages of development or construction.

Aypa Power is proposing to build the Yadkins Energy Storage Project, a 100 MW battery energy storage system in Chesapeake, Virginia. This project will leverage state-of-the-art storage technology to safely store electricity from the grid when demand is low and release it to consumers when it's needed most.

The current project is designed to meet all local, state, and national safety and permitting requirements.  It is strategically located over 600 feet from the nearest building property — more than twice the City's 300-foot residential setback requirement. Together, we are building a safer and more reliable electric grid for the Commonwealth.

Safety Culture

We share in the City of Chesapeake's unwavering commitment to public safety.

The project will adhere to all local, state, and national safety standards, including a layered fire safety plan developed in partnership with Chesapeake Fire.

Far from

Residents

The project is thoughtfully located over 600 feet from the nearest residential property, twice the 300-foot distance requirement established by the City of Chesapeake. Surrounding vegetation also makes the project invisible to the public.

Investing in Chesapeake

We're proud to serve Virginia communities through our partnerships and charitable giving. As the project advances we're committing tens of thousands of dollars to Chesapeake community organizations.

Project Overview

The Yadkins project is a proposed 100 megawatt / 400 megawatt-hour energy storage facility that will be located in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Located within Chesapeake's commercial and industrial zones, the Yadkins project is strategically located to serve power demand at the Yadkins substation, over 600 feet from the nearest building property.

How

Energy Storage Works

  • An advanced energy management system oversees the equipment 24/7 to guarantee
the secure, reliable exchange of energy from the grid.

  • During periods of low demand, like nighttime, energy is stored from the grid.

  • In times of high demand, stored energy is instantly released back to the grid, typically
    in a matter of milliseconds.

  • Energy is seamlessly available to homes, schools, business, and other consumers.

Aypa Power uses state-of-the-art energy storage systems known for their safety and dependability.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Aypa Power will build, own, and operate the project under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Dominion Energy.

  • The project will be located in the Deep Creek community, proposed on lands currently designated for B2 General Business use. The project will be sited in a largely industrial area and over 600 feet from the nearest building property -- over double the City's 300-foot residential setback requirements.

  • The Yadkins Energy Storage Project will have a 360-degree natural vegetative fencing that will me it invisible to the public.

  • The project is expected to bring local economic benefits to Chesapeake, including over $5 million in net tax revenue and tens of thousands of dollars to local community-based organizations.

During peak construction, the project is expected to create over 70 jobs. These jobs will not only provide employment opportunities for the area, but also stimulate the local economy by increasing demand for local goods and services.

  • Project construction is scheduled to commence in 2026, subject to permitting approvals.

  • Aypa Power upholds a culture of “Safety Without Compromise.” Each of our projects complies with all applicable codes and standards for BESS and equipment, including NFPA 855, UL 9540. In addition to these national codes and standards, our projects meet all building, fire, and zoning codes of the state and locality where they’ll be sited.

Our storage systems further incorporate a comprehensive, project-specific Emergency Response Plan (ERP), developed in direct coordination with local Fire officials and independent third-party organizations deeply familiar with BESS safety and code compliance. A layered fire safety plan incorporates accounts for effective preventative measures, fire growth control, life safety and property protection, and fire mitigation.

Finally, each system is designed with redundant, fail-safe mechanisms both at the site and component level, and undergoes continuous monitoring by our 24/7 Remote Operating Center.

  • In addition to the economic benefits that Yadkins Energy Storage Project will provide, there are also significant environmental benefits. Using the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) greenhouse gas equivalencies calculator, the project is estimated to offset carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 102,000 metric tons annually. This is equivalent to removing 24,275 cars from the road for one year.

  • The Yadkins Energy Storage Project will comply with all City of Chesapeake noise ordinances and sound levels, confirmed by a third-party acoustic sound analysis. The site location and strategic design reduce sound levels by creating a large distance from residential areas and by maintaining existing vegetation surrounding the site.
